Tips for Protecting Your Outdoor AC Unit

Keeping the air conditioner in your Cleburne, Texas, home running efficiently is especially important in the summer. One part of maintaining efficiency involves protecting the outdoor AC unit. Your outdoor AC unit is subject to the elements, sometimes making it difficult to protect. Here are four tips for protecting it:

Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

Tall grass, weeds, leaves and branches can easily fall onto your outdoor AC unit. As a result, they can create obstructions that interfere with your system’s ability to cool your home. You can prevent some of this buildup by cleaning around the outdoor unit. Remove any branches that hang over the unit, and trim tall grasses and shrubbery so that there’s at least a foot of clearance around it.

Approach the Outdoor Unit With Caution

You need to be mindful when working around your outdoor unit so that you don’t damage it. Always blow and cut debris away from the unit. Remove any stones and sticks in your path when mowing to avoid damaging the fins.

Cover the Outdoor Unit When Not in Use

During the offseason, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends covering your outdoor AC unit with a tarp or other type of protective material. Even though you don’t have to worry about snow, ice in the winter months can cause damage. High winds during the fall months can also push unwanted debris into your coil fins.

Schedule an Annual AC Tune-up

Despite your best efforts, your outdoor unit will likely get dirty over time. A service technician clean and inspect the components annually to make sure they’re operating properly. As a result, your air conditioner will maximize efficiency, break down less often and last a long time.
